Teaching
Philosophy

In the voice studio, I see myself as more of a teammate, less of a captain. I do not subscribe to the master-apprentice model of teaching. I find much more long-term success and enjoyment in seeing what we can both discover together. I value collaboration, exploration, and growth—as messy as that process can sometimes be. My approach is always to listen, be present and adjust to the singer in the room with me, which can vary day to day, moment to moment.

In an industry that is so competitive, so demanding, so fast-paced, I believe voice lessons are a time to play, slowwww down, make mistakes, and practice courage in a safe environment. Process over product. We go to the theater to see our own humanity reflected back to us. We feel pressure to perform perfection but we are moved by raw, [tastefully] flawed, authentic artistry. I like to treat the voice studio as a space to practice connecting to self and integrating the mind, body, voice and soul.

As someone who has trained in both classical and contemporary styles, I am a strong advocate for genre cross-training to develop a flexible, free and balanced voice. My approach to voice building is gender neutral. I celebrate individuality, and I do not seek to cultivate voices that sound the same in order to “fit the mold”. Yes, there are certain foundational and stylistic skills to master, but I am not interested in boxes or labels. By prioritizing efficient vocal function in any style (though the vocal coordinations are different), singers can both meet industry demands and sound uniquely themselves. Most importantly, my goal is for you to feel at home and confident in your own voice. Let’s make YOU sing like the best YOU there is.
